UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a girl harboring multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, all possessing unique anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, while other scenes show the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.

A World of Personal Dread

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."

The core mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice

At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms where their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one remaining could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
