UN Lifts Sanctions on Syria's Leader Prior to Presidential Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

United Nations Security Council members approved to a US resolution ending penalties on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria ahead of his White House visit the coming week.

Sharaa was named interim leader subsequent to commanding a rebel offensive that ousted the previous leader in winter 2024, bringing to a close 13 years of internal conflict.

America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a strong political signal" that acknowledged Syria entered "a different period" since Assad was deposed.

Previously, he faced global penalties while commanding the religious organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), previously associated with al-Qaeda. Washington eliminated HTS from a list of foreign terror groups during July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of the sanctions, posting on social media: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and to friendly nations for backing of Syria and its people."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

The Syrian leader's Washington trip on Monday comes after US President Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president demonstrated "substantial headway" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.

Placeholder Trump and Sharaa meeting
Following their discussion, Trump said Sharaa had "a real shot at pulling it together".

The two leaders convened initially in May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of Arab nations.

Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed Sharaa as a "tough guy" possessing a "powerful background".

His Islamist group HTS was al-Qaeda's affiliate inside the country before he cut connections during 2016.

Prior United States Journey

The upcoming meeting does not represent the president's debut journey to America during this period. During September, he became the initial Syrian president to present to the UN General Assembly in New York in almost 60 years.

Throughout his presentation, he declared the nation was "restoring its proper position within the global community" and expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza.
