The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after failing a vote of confidence that came after his controversial social media posts about the conservative activist.

The vote against the student leader reached the required super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the society.

Contentious Posts

The dispute erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly posted messages on social media that appeared to welcome the death of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a university in Utah.

According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.

The president-elect is also said to have posted in a messaging group with fellow students appearing to express approval of the event.

Election Results

The vote of confidence took place over the recent days, with results revealed on Tuesday.

Official notices showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.

The announcement stated that the future president was considered to have resigned in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.

Election Controversies

Voting operations were informally suspended early on Monday after the election official was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from several representatives.

In a response, the student claimed that the vote tally had been halted because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".

His statement categorically refuted that any representative appointed by George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Ongoing Dispute

The student maintained that significant concerns had been referred to the governing body and that he continued as the elected leader.

His statement added that he was "proud and thankful to have the support of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who supported a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Opponents have argued that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Responses

On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an public message to the society on a related program broadcast.

The message accused the society of becoming a place where "presidents of the union openly applaud the assassination of a political opponent".

The communication warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, supporters would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had previously criticized the student's comments after the activist's killing and stated that complaints submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The student leader had been one of multiple members to discuss with the activist at the society in May.
