More than 250 persons have been arrested in Charlotte, North Carolina, as part of continuing federal immigration control operations, according to official sources.

Widening Federal Measures

Charlotte marks the latest American city to experience strengthened federal involvement, following comparable operations in major metropolitan areas like Chicago and Los Angeles in recent months. Administration representatives have claimed that those arrested include persons with illegal activities and organized crime affiliates.

Regional Objections

However, community representatives and inhabitants have vocally opposed the arrests, which federal officials have termed "Operation Charlotte's Web". The state's Democratic governor has asserted that people are being targeted based on their ethnicity.

"We've seen concealed, armed officers in paramilitary attire driving plain vehicles, targeting American citizens based on their physical characteristics, engaging in racial discrimination and arresting arbitrary people in parking areas," commented the chief executive. "This strategy is not strengthening our protection."

Government Stance

In a newly released declaration, a federal spokesperson stated that the operation has resulted in the detention of "some of the most dangerous criminal undocumented individuals", including organized crime affiliates.

Other individuals detained had been previously convicted for various offenses, comprising violence toward law enforcement agents, DWI offenses, robbery and manipulating government records, according to the authority.

Local Reaction

The city's mayor, similarly a Democrat, requested federal officials to operate with "regard" for the city's standards. She furthermore commended those who participated in substantial groups on Saturday to oppose the federal government's actions in the city.
