The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored only a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
