‘It appears magical’: does light therapy actually deliver clearer skin, healthier teeth, and more resilient joints?
Phototherapy is certainly having a surge in popularity. You can now buy illuminated devices targeting issues like complexion problems and aging signs as well as aching tissues and gum disease, the newest innovation is a toothbrush outfitted with tiny red LEDs, marketed by the company as “a breakthrough for domestic dental hygiene.” Globally, the market was worth $1bn in 2024 and is projected to grow to $1.8bn by 2035. “It feels almost magical,” notes a Durham University professor, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Of course, certain impacts of light on human physiology are proven. Our bodies produce vitamin D through sun exposure, needed for bone health, immunity, muscles and more. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, additionally, triggering the release of neurochemicals and hormones while we are awake, and signaling the body to slow down for nighttime. Artificial sun lamps are standard treatment for winter mood disorders to elevate spirits during colder months. Undoubtedly, light plays a vital role in human health.
Different Light Modalities
While Sad lamps tend to use a mixture of light frequencies from the blue end of the spectrum, most other light therapy devices deploy red or infrared light. In rigorous scientific studies, such as Chazot’s investigations into the effects of infrared on brain cells, determining the precise frequency is essential. Light constitutes electromagnetic energy, extending from long-wavelength radiation to the highest-energy (gamma waves). Therapeutic light application uses wavelengths around the middle of this spectrum, including invisible ultraviolet radiation, then the visible spectrum we perceive as colors and finally infrared detectable with special equipment.
Dermatologists have utilized UV therapy for extensive periods to manage persistent skin disorders including eczema and psoriasis. It modulates intracellular immune mechanisms, “and reduces inflammatory processes,” notes a dermatology expert. “Substantial research supports light therapy.” UVA goes deeper into the skin than UVB, in contrast to LEDs in commercial products (typically emitting red, infrared or blue wavelengths) “typically have shallower penetration.”
Safety Considerations and Medical Oversight
The side-effects of UVB exposure, including sunburn or skin darkening, are well known but in medical devices the light is delivered in a “narrow-band” form – meaning smaller wavelengths – that reduces potential hazards. “Treatment is monitored by medical staff, meaning intensity is regulated,” explains the dermatologist. And crucially, the lightbulbs are calibrated by medical technicians, “to guarantee appropriate wavelength emission – unlike in tanning salons, where it’s a bit unregulated, and wavelength accuracy isn’t verified.”
Consumer Devices and Evidence Gaps
Red and blue light sources, he says, “aren’t really used in the medical sense, but they may help with certain conditions.” Red LEDs, it is proposed, improve circulatory function, oxygen utilization and skin cell regeneration, and promote collagen synthesis – a primary objective in youth preservation. “Research exists,” comments the expert. “However, it’s limited.” Regardless, given the plethora of available tools, “we don’t know whether or not the lights emitted are reflective of the research that has been done. Optimal treatment times are unknown, ideal distance from skin surface, if benefits outweigh potential risks. Numerous concerns persist.”
Treatment Areas and Specialist Views
Early blue-light applications focused on skin microbes, microorganisms connected to breakouts. The evidence for its efficacy isn’t strong enough for it to be routinely prescribed by doctors – despite the fact that, says Ho, “it’s frequently employed in beauty centers.” Individuals include it in their skincare practices, he says, though when purchasing home devices, “we advise cautious experimentation and safety verification. Without proper medical classification, standards are somewhat unclear.”
Cutting-Edge Studies and Biological Processes
Meanwhile, in a far-flung field of pioneering medical science, researchers have been testing neural cells, identifying a number of ways in which infrared can boost cellular health. “Virtually all experiments with specific wavelengths showed beneficial and safeguarding effects,” he says. The numerous reported benefits have generated doubt regarding phototherapy – that results appear unrealistic. But his research has thoroughly changed his mind in that respect.
Chazot mostly works on developing drug treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, but over 20 years ago, a doctor developing photonic antiviral treatment consulted his scientific background. “He created some devices so that we could work with them with cells and with fruit flies,” he explains. “I remained doubtful. This particular frequency was around 1070 nanometers, that nobody believed did anything biological.”
What it did have going for it, though, was its ability to transmit through aqueous environments, meaning it could penetrate the body more deeply.
Cellular Energy and Neurological Benefits
More evidence was emerging at the time that infrared light targeted the mitochondria in cells. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, producing fuel for biological processes. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, including the brain,” notes the researcher, who prioritized neurological investigations. “Studies demonstrate enhanced cerebral circulation with light treatment, which is always very good.”
Using 1070nm wavelength, mitochondria also produce a small amount of a molecule known as reactive oxygen species. In low doses this substance, says Chazot, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, preserve cell function and eliminate damaged proteins.”
Such mechanisms indicate hope for cognitive disorders: oxidative protection, anti-inflammatory, and waste removal – autophagy representing cellular waste disposal.
