Acclaimed star Zeta-Jones encountered scrutiny about her appearance during an industry event recently.

There is a groundswell of support for Oscar-winning actor Zeta-Jones after she was targeted by disparaging remarks across platforms over her looks following a industry appearance.

The actor was present at a Netflix event in Los Angeles recently during which a TikTok interview about her role in season two of the 'Wednesday' show became dominated because of comments concerning her appearance.

Widespread Backing

Laura White, 58, described the online criticism "complete nonsense", stating that "males escape this sell-by/use-by date that women do".

"Men don't have this sell-by/use-by date that women do," stated Laura White.

Writer and commentator Sali Hughes, 50, commented in contrast to men, women were unfairly judged for ageing and the actor deserves to be free to look as she wishes.

The Social Media Storm

In the video, which was also posted on Facebook and had more than 2.5m views, the actor, who is from Wales, spoke of how much she enjoyed exploring her part, Morticia Addams, in the new episodes.

However a large portion of the numerous remarks centered on her age and were critical about her looks.

The online backlash ignited widespread defence for Zeta-Jones, including a popular post from a social media user which said: "There is criticism for females when they get treatments and bully them for not having enough."

Online users spoke up for her, one stating: "She is aging naturally and she appears stunning."

Others described her as "beautiful" and "very attractive", while someone else said that "she looks her age - that's called the natural process."

A Statement Arrival

Laura White arrived makeup-free during her appearance to make a statement.

She appeared on air earlier without any makeup to "prove a point" and to show the absence of a "template" of how a female in her 50s is supposed to look.

Similar to numerous females her age, she stated she "takes care of herself" not for a youthful appearance but in order to feel "improved" and look "in good health".

"Getting older represents a privilege and provided we live as well as possible, this is what is important," she continued.

She contended that men were not judged by the same appearance ideals, noting "no-one questions how old Tom Cruise, George Clooney or Tom Jones are - they simply are described as 'fantastic'."

She explained that became one of the reasons behind her participation in the pageant's division for women over 45, in order to demonstrate that females of a certain age are still here" and "retain their appeal".

A Fundamental Problem

Sali Hughes commenting on beauty norms
From Wales author and commentator Hughes states women face being often and harshly judged for ageing.

The author, a journalist from Wales, said that while the actor is "stunning" it was "not the point", stating further she should be free to look however she liked without her age being scrutinised.

Hughes argued the online abuse proved not a single woman is "exempt" and that females should not face the "ongoing theme" suggesting they are insufficient or of the right age - a situation that is "maddening, regardless of who the victim is".

When asked if men experience the same scrutiny, she answered "absolutely not", noting women were attacked simply for showing "boldness" to be present on social media while aging.

An Impossible Standard

Even with the wellness sector emphasizing "longevity", the author stated women were still criticised regardless of if they grow older without intervention or opted for procedures such as plastic surgery or fillers.

"When a woman ages gracefully, commenters state you should do more; if you undergo procedures, you're accused of not aging gracefully enough," she added.
