Democrats Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials voiced fury after former President Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and declared they should be taken into custody and sentenced "by death" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Content That Sparked the Debate
The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who in the past acted in military or intelligence roles.
"Similar to us, you all swore an vow to protect and uphold this constitution," the officials declared in the 90-second video. "At present, the threats to our constitution are not only from abroad, but from domestically. Our laws are clear, you can decline improper directives, you can decline illegal orders, you should refuse illegal orders. No one has to follow orders that contravene the legal system or our constitution."
Trump's Angry Reaction
The clip appeared to prompt a angry reaction from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he declared: "This represents really bad, and Harmful to our Nation. Their words cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Officials Respond
Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats published a unified statement denouncing the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no place in America," they wrote. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all served our nation with great national pride and excellence. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful calls for execution against members of Congress, and urge GOP representatives to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in touch with protective services "to make certain the security of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these unhinged online messages and retract his aggressive rhetoric before he causes harm," the declaration added.
Representatives' Defiant Response
The lawmakers who participated in the video also issued a statement.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who value this nation and swore an vow to defend and defend the national charter of the United States," they said. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we intend to keep it. No intimidation, pressure, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that sacred duty."
"What's most telling is that the former president considers it punishable by death for us to restate the statutes," they stated. "Our service members should understand that we have their backs as they execute their oath to the founding principles and duty to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "All citizens must unite and condemn the president's calls for our death and ideological conflict. This is a period for ethical certainty."
More Partisan Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's comments and published on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is requesting the capital punishment of public representatives."
He added: "This represents an clear THREAT. All senators, every Representative, all citizens – regardless of party – should censure this without delay and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "It is very risky, you have leading members of the government advising troops to ignore directives, I think that's historic in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also according to sources informed the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "defining the offense of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to examine the language and decide all that."
Administration Reaction
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a media member, "Does the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the executive branch representative answered: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the spokesperson stated. "There are current representatives of the American legislature who conspired to organize a video message to individuals of the US military, to serving soldiers urging them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She added: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that system is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can result in chaos, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are basically supporting."
